Plastic vs Cosmetic Surgeon: Key Differences
How plastic and cosmetic surgeons differ in training, regulation, and specialist register requirements across the UK and EU.
The terms are not interchangeable
It is one of the most consequential misunderstandings in aesthetic medicine: the words "plastic surgeon" and "cosmetic surgeon" sound similar but describe very different levels of regulation. Understanding the distinction is the single best way to protect yourself before booking a procedure.
What "plastic surgeon" means
Plastic surgery is a recognised medical specialty. To hold the title, a doctor must complete many years of accredited surgical training and earn entry onto a national specialist register — the GMC Specialist Register in the UK, or the equivalent specialist register in each EU country. The title is, in effect, protected: it reflects examined, certified competence in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery.
What "cosmetic surgeon" means
"Cosmetic surgeon" is a descriptive label, not a protected specialty. In the UK and much of the EU, any licensed doctor may describe themselves as a cosmetic surgeon regardless of their core specialty. A doctor calling themselves a cosmetic surgeon may be a fully registered plastic surgeon — or may have trained in an entirely different field. The label alone tells you nothing about their surgical qualifications.
UK and EU regulatory standards compared
- UK: Confirm the surgeon is on the GMC Specialist Register under Plastic Surgery, with no restrictions. BAAPS / BAPRAS membership is a further signal.
- EU: Each country maintains its own specialist register — the BIG-register (Netherlands), Ärztekammer (Germany), Ordine dei Medici (Italy), the Conseil de l'Ordre (France/Belgium), and others. Look for the specialist qualification in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery.
- In every jurisdiction, the public register — not the clinic's marketing — is the authoritative source of truth.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a cosmetic surgeon the same as a plastic surgeon?
- No. 'Plastic surgeon' is a protected specialist title earned through years of accredited surgical training and entry onto a national specialist register. 'Cosmetic surgeon' is a descriptive term that, in the UK and much of the EU, any licensed doctor may use regardless of their surgical specialty.
- How do I check a surgeon is a registered plastic surgeon in the UK?
- Search the GMC online register and confirm the doctor appears on the Specialist Register under Plastic Surgery. Membership of BAAPS or BAPRAS is a further signal of standing.
- Does the same distinction apply across the EU?
- Yes. Each EU country maintains a specialist register — such as the BIG-register in the Netherlands or the Ärztekammer in Germany — listing doctors qualified in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. Always confirm the specialist qualification with the national body where the clinic operates.
